HOW TO GO NATURAL: TRANSITION OR "BIG CHOP"?

I want to go natural, but I don’t know how is a statement that we often see. The process of going natural is not as scary as you may think. Honestly, making the decision to go natural may be one of the best decisions you will ever make in your hair journey. When going natural there are two methods you can do. You can either “Big chop” or Transition. When choosing a method, it is important to weigh out the pros/cons of each and decide which would best fit you.

Big Chop

Personally the “Big chop” method was not the route that I was willing to take. Kudos to those who choose to “big chop”. The “Big chop” method is when you cut off all or most of your relaxed hair at once. This method is the most drastic, but most women find it liberating. The “big chop’’ is a great way to start over.

Pros of Big Chop

1. Easy maintenance

2. You will be able to figure out your texture faster.

3. May be the change you need.

Cons of Big Chop

1. You may not like the results.

2. There’s no styling variety.

3. People will always have something to say about the change.

Tip for those who decide to big chop: Do not worry about what others have to say. People are going to talk regardless of what you do. Let them talk . Remember you are beautiful. And its just hair, it will grow back.

Transitioning

Transitioning is the method that I personally decided to go with, like many other naturals. Transitioning is the process in which you decide to stop processing your hair. This means no more relaxers or chemicals. The objective to transitioning is to let your hair grow out until you are completely natural. When transition it is especially important to take care of your hair. Your hair is very vulnerable and can break off easily during this process.

Pros of transitioning

1. You will hold your length.

2. You will learn to care for your hair.

3. You will learn patience.

Cons of transitioning

1. You will have two different textures.

2. Difficulty styling hair.

3. It will take longer to find your true hair pattern.

Tips for those who transition: Trim your hair regularly. This will help your hair stay healthy and speed up the transition. Also keep your hair moisturized and deep conditioned. Protective styles is also helpful when you are transitioning.
